The Call: Not the best but not the worse

I feel bad for the people who paid for this, oh wait that’s me.

I don’t know why I went in thinking this would be a horror, but I sure as hell wasn’t disappointed too much. This film got me deeply considering a job as an emergency call-centre operator. I’m not joking.

The call reminded me how easily we forget that doctors and firefighters etc. are not the only ones out there saving lives. In fact, the operators are just as important if not more. Why didn’t we clap for them during the lockdown?

The movie follows an operator called Jordan who saves lives daily by answering calls and helping what they call a PR, Person Reporting. However, she faces a time where she becomes attached to one of the PR’s and is then devastated when she fails to assist them.

The question that we are left with is: will Jordan be able to overcome her devastation to get back to saving lives or will she ride the train to the depression station? This is what she must face when a young teenage girl calls in.

I’ll admit I wasn’t hooked throughout the film however I didn’t want to stop watching. It had everything a film needed to entice its viewer: a relatable protagonist, a damsel in distress, a psychopathic villain, a relatable plot and to top it all off it supported the idea of women empowerment.

Not to mention the way the film allowed its viewers to unfold the story along with the characters, we were leaning just as much as they were, with a few added clues on top.

It does a great job drifting between both stories that are being played out, merging the environments almost seamlessly. Despite each scene containing completely different atmospheres.

So, the question still stands, why wasn’t I hooked? That one’s easy to answer and it's simple, the plot begins to ride completely off the rails by the time you make it to the finale.

Everything kind of just falls into place and happens as if by a miracle, it is just too coincidental. Which is a shame considering the beginning of the film is incredibly strong and is filled with difficult obstacles they overcome, only to fall flat by the end.

All in all, it's not a terrible film but it's not the best either. Definitely don’t pay for it, but if a friend has it on DVD and you have nothing better to do, then go for it.
