I’ve seen many variations of Frankenstein, but none match the exceptional performance, story and cinematography shown in the play.

This wasn’t a theatre performance; this was an artist at their work. Never before have I witnessed a live show be presented with such detail and top-notch acting. It was as if they planned for it to be a filmed movie and decided to throw that out the window and switch to theatre at the last second.

I envy the audience that was able to experience this show live in front of them, I can only imagine how much more powerful the performances were. Not to mention the outstanding cinematography and make-up, they never let anything fall beneath perfection when preparing this sensation.

The play follows the Beast played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who was created by the scientist Frankenstein. Only to be left alone to fend for himself despite only just being born.

He begins to learn and understand the negatives and dangers of society, only having met one kindness in his life.

During his bleak journey, he ventures back to his place of birth, in hopes of Frankenstein being able to cure his sorrow.

The story was amazingly executed, to the point, I forgot it was two hours long. Every second of the performance was showcased at 1000% on that stage by every actor, not to mention the outstanding cinematography.

Despite it being a play, it didn’t stop the director from using cameras to their advantage. Providing us with various angles such as bird's eye view for specific scenes.

Surprisingly, technology was not prominent within this show, their main focus was their use of props. However, they were still able to make one of the most seamless on-stage transitions I have ever seen.

Their use of makeup on the Beast was extraordinarily realistic, not to mention the beginning scene where the Monster was first introduced. Truly horrifying and believable, I felt as if I were witnessing the birth of something unnatural.

It is without a doubt that Benedict Cumberbatch put on one of the best performances in history, and I say this with no hesitation. Once he was on that stage, he truly believed he was that Beast, that is the only way he could perform that believable.

In short, if you haven’t seen this Frankenstein performance by the National Theatre, I highly recommend it. Words can not express how powerful this play is from all the actors, prop makers, makeup artists, the director, heck the entire cast.

I’ve watched Frankenstein as a TV show and as a Movie in many variations, and I have never seen a more powerful representation than this play.
